One of the stories from the reading portion of TAKS practice a while back that has stayed with me and was unforgettable. Written by Kathryn Forbes, mama tells her children of weekly trips she takes to the bank in order to help them feel secure. Researching the story I found out that there’s actually a book written about it that goes on to tell the story completely. A little background information for those who aren’t familiar with the text: an immigrant family faces struggles and troubles of everyday life and is given the privilege of living wealthy; however the mother of the family leads them fearlessly through the hard times and bears their burden so that they may not worry.
Reflecting and finding out that it was based on a true story is inspiring. I couldn’t help but notice the similarities of how our heavenly father voluntarily bears our burdens, just as mama does in the story. In the story, although they are poor they are willing to board and give to others without accepting any money in return. To me this paints the perfect illustration of a believer’s relationship with the Lord. He provides for our every need and in return only wants to be glorified and honored, after all it all belongs to him anyway (Psalm 24:1).
I have a record of not keeping up with my personal finances and holding myself accountable for how much I spent. As a result I’ve over drafted but luckily the bank has a built in system that helps zero the balance. Just as the bank works their magic keeping their customers above water, God has a way of not only providing what you need but He does it in ample amounts and covers you with His love and power. He has paid our debts in full already by sending Jesus to die on the cross but He goes above and beyond to make sure our needs are met, which I sometimes take for granted. Just as in the story, He doesn’t dish out what we can’t handle. If we do find ourselves drowning in fear or worry He’s always there to remind us that we are okay.
Psalm 24:1- The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;
