While we were in Greece, one of the ministries we did was buy water bottles. We bought 18 water bottles using the funds that people donated to us through our GoFundMe. Earlier in the day, we had written out notes in Greek that said “This water is from Jesus. He loves you and He sees you.” We attached the notes to the water bottles and went on a prayer walk through the streets looking for people to give them to. It just so happened to be one of the hottest days of the week (high 90’s), and we were able to give water bottles to some homeless men and women, a city worker picking up trash, and a refugee couple and their three small children (who literally ran to us when they saw that we were carrying water). Even though the conversations we held with people today were a combination of hand motions and broken English, they were still conversations. And the people who got the water bottles may have thrown away those notes; we’ll never know. The important thing is that God knows, he sees them and loves them.
Another ministry we did was hand out flowers. Similar to the water bottles, we had written out notes in Greek that said “This flower is from Jesus. He loves you and He sees you.” We went out on the streets with a specific vision to spread love and joy to the women of Thessaloniki. Some of us felt specifically called to older women, some to mothers with strollers, and some to the ladies who stand on the corners and hand out signs. We walked, prayed, and interacted with more than 30 incredible women throughout the afternoon. Before we left our apartment for the morning, we made sure that we knew how to say the word “free” in Greek, because many people in Greece struggle to understand that something is actually being given to them at no cost. It was so neat to see how the women were not expecting a gift but were grateful and happy for the flower. Some even said it was the best part of their day!
