Tanzania was a month of learning more about being a child in the Kingdom for me. The Lord used the sweet Tanzanian children around me to teach me how to be in His kingdom. One Sunday morning in church I had the privilege of having 6 sweet children sit/lay on my lap throughout the entire service. I can’t tell you what the sermon was about that day but I can tell you what the Holy Spirit was revealing to me, he was teaching me about Jesus’ lap. As I sat rubbing these small childrens’ backs and prayed over them, sang over them and let them play with my hands, hair and jewelry I felt complete love for these children, and Jesus started to show me through them that, that’s how he feels about me except times a million. So here is what I learned about Jesus’ lap, and I hope maybe the next time a small child crawls up onto your lap you will be able to better understand how Jesus feels about you.
As we rest on Jesus’ lap he sings over us to draw us deeper into rest.
He prays over us as we sit, that we would prosper, that we would grow big and strong.
As we rest on Jesus’ lap he protects us from all harm big and small.
We can rest secure in his arms, because we know that he will keep watch and will not let any harm come our way.
As we rest on Jesus’ lap he strokes our backs and comforts us, and it relaxes us and reminds us of his tangible love.
It reassures us that he is there and that he is for us, and that draws us deeper into rest and peace.
As we rest on Jesus’ lap we gaze upon him and look him in the eyes to see how he feels about us, he is always smiling.
As we rest on Jesus’ lap we realize that there is no part of him that we don’t have access to. There is always room for one more on this lap.
One of the greatest lessons I learned that day is that final line, there was one girl who came and sat beside me and looked longingly at my lap and the other girls that we laying and sitting there. I reached out my hand to her and placed it on her back and lovingly rubbed it and then gestured to a spot that was open and invited her to come and rest her head too. She looked at the place and I knew that she wanted to come, but her timidity held her back. She stayed by my side and received my love but not my rest and she wasn’t able to receive like the other little girls that held nothing back and came to get what they needed. Often our own timidity holds us back from receiving from Jesus. Everything he has and Everything he is, is available to us, but we need to boldly come in that confidence and receive what we need just like those little girls. Jesus wants us, he wants us to come, he wants us to receive all of him. He desires intimacy with me, and he desires intimacy with you, he is ready to give it the question is are we ready to receive it?
