Hi everyone!
This is my first real blog post! Woo-hoo! Please be patient with me while I figure out what exactly blogging is; this is new for me!
So you’re probably wondering what inspired me to apply for and commit to such a radical journey for a year. The truth is, I have The Holy Spirit, the Peace Corps, and Mark Zuckerberg to thank for this incredible journey!
Towards the end of college I looked into joining the Peace Corps after graduation. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Peace Corps, it is an incredible organization that sends people out into impoverished areas of the world to help develop their communities (environmentally, socially, economically, etc.) When you are a Peace Corps volunteer, you are committed to two years of service wherever they station you, and you may or may not be the only Peace Corps volunteer in your town or region even.
God has always filled my heart with a desire to serve and connect with people, but committing to two years (potentially alone) away from my family seemed a bit too huge of a commitment for me. I did however follow the Peace Corps on Facebook, and still keep up on their postings and everything.
One night I was in bed skimming through Facebook, and one of my Peace Corps “Related Pages” that came up was “The World Race” and the caption beneath it was “The World Race is an 11-month journey around the world where you visit 11 different countries. It’s NOT your typical Christian mission trip”. This peaked my interest, and I followed the link to their page and subsequently to their website.
As I read through all of their FAQs and information on the Race, I could feel myself being pulled into it and felt something in my heart that told me “This is it! This is your purpose!”. That night as I fell asleep, my mind was filled with all the wonderful things God could use me to accomplish on this beautiful journey.
Over the next few weeks, I continued to find myself being drawn back to the World Race website, and was constantly pouring over all of the information and testimonials. I prayed and prayed that God would give me further clarity about how I should proceed, and it always pointed me back here.
I am so incredibly excited for the journey that He has laid out before my feet. It will undoubtedly be a journey full of joy, pain, sadness, excitement, heartbreak, and love. And all along the way, Christ will walk beside me as I do my best to share His love with the world. I can’t wait!
