Ever since I was a kid I dreamed about traveling the world. My dream has become a reality now that I’m on the World Race!
We are ending our second month of the race in Honduras and we will be heading to El Salvador tomorrow! I’ve never had to cross a countries border by foot until last month. After our first month in Belize, we all got on a bus and drove for several hours to the border of Belize, then got off the bus with all of our backpacks and walked through the border control building. We gave them our passports and of course payed a fee.. As soon as we came out of the other side of the building we were in Guatemala! A bus picked us up and we ended up driving the rest of the night to the border of Honduras. I ended up sleeping on the floor of the bus almost the whole time and I slept on top of all the luggage at the back of the bus the rest of the time! We got to the border 3 hours before it opened. Apparently borders have hours of operation.. who knew! We waited in the parking lot with no bathrooms in sight! Every one had to go! Luckily, I had stolen a role of toilet paper from the hostel we had stayed at so we all could use it. I got off the bus with my toilet paper in hand, the majority of us went out in a field and did our business. What bonding time… at the border of Guatemala at 4am, squatting in a field with your friends! Once it opened, we went through to the other side and got back on the bus for most of the day. We were on the buses for an estimated total of 23 hours!
The bus dropped us off on the side of the road, we got our packs on and walked about 15 minutes on a dirt road to our hosts house where we were staying for the month.
I’m hearing that we will only be in the bus for 8 hours (which will probably be more like 15 hours) and we only have one border to cross this time to get to El Salvador!
We just got on our first bus at 2:30am and are now waiting at a bus stop with our backpacks to get on our second bus at 4:15am. It’s going to be a wild night! I’m prepared though.. I have toilet paper!
