“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.”
Proverbs 18:4
The nature of deep waters is that they are inherently very dark. To go into the deepest waters requires a lot of preparation and special precautions to ensure safety, life, really. The waters are rarely traveled because there is a heaviness, a pressure, and one cannot see very far. Most have no idea what deep waters behold, for they have never ventured to suit up with enough protection to make the journey.
So it can be with man’s words. Yet words come much more freely than an opportunity to see the depths of the ocean. Less preparation is considered to guard oneself against his words. Yet the words of a man’s mouth are comparative to ‘deep waters.’
But oh, the fountain of wisdom! It’s nature is nearly opposite that of deep waters. A bubbling brook is transparent. You can see all of its contents, each rock or bit of sand. Yet one who stands by the brook feels refreshed because it’s water is clean and flows with a certain grace.
Wisdom can be transparent. One can see her weaknesses because she makes them known. Yet one desires to stand by her because there is a peace that is worth standing for. One loves the brook because one can know it and know it with no opposition nor preparation, for wisdom’s waters flow freely.
