Immanuel. God with us.

Not many words ring more true. Not many words sound so sweet. One of my favorite Christmas carols is “O Come O Come, Immanuel”. This song is not only glorious to hear, but each lyric is rich with deep meaning and theology. Look at these lyrics:

“Oh, come, Desire of nations, bind

In one the hearts of all mankind;

Oh, bid our sad divisions cease,

And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel

Shall come to you, O Israel!”

Nancy Leigh DeMoss says: “I learned that it may be one of the oldest Christmas carols that is sung today.”

This ancient Christmas carol reminds me of a beautiful reality. What reality? The one that Jesus is the desire of nations! These lyrics fill my heart with joy and peace. When we go to the nations, we are bringing with us the Good News that shall be to ALL people. “For unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” He WILL bind our hearts. He WILL bid our sad divisions cease. Praise the Lord. Our Prince of Peace. He’s coming for His Bride.

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14 (ESV)

“Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel, shall come to thee, O Israel!”
