It has been five years since I’ve been in Africa. My first time was in 2005, when I went with my college, Spring Arbor University, to visit South Africa. I had fallen in love with South Africa the minute I stepped foot on its soil and I wondered if I would have the same feelings toward Kenya. Sure enough, I did. I was worried I would compare Kenya to South Africa, but I’ve been able to see Kenya for it’s unique beauty and still appreciate South Africa for its. I’m pretty sure the Lord has just given me a heart for Africa, no matter if I’m in the north, south, east or west. One of my professors who lead my trip back in 2005 told us about an African proverb that said, “once you are under the African sun, you will always be called back.” I never forgot that, and it’s so true. A piece of me came alive the minute I got off the plane. I was SO EXCITED to be back.

We were immediately welcomed by our contacts, Pastor Elisha and his family. We are in Kisumu, Kenya, which is where Lake Victoria is located and the views, which include mountains are breath-taking. One of our new friends, Gilbert, told us that Kenya is a magical place and that we needed to wait and just experience the magic. Our pastor also reminded us (and this is true to life in general), “there are some things you should see with your eyes, rather than hear with your ears.” For years I’ve heard about Kenya, but God knew I needed to see it with my own eyes, experience it myself. I know He brought me here, for such a time as this. I’m so thankful to be here. I am taking it all in. From the trips to the market, to waving to people on the street, to pulling a child up on my lap, to experiencing new foods. I’m thanking God for it all! He has blessed my life.I cannot say that enough. Please enjoy some of what I’ve experienced already…the beautiful people, the beautiful land…God’s goodness.
