I want you all to get acquainted with my new family for the year:

Team Concrete. Katey, Sarah, Casey, Esther, Mark, Cricket, and myself.

The name was birthed out of a miscommunication early on the Race while we were still in the Atlanta airport. Sarah and I were in a deep conversation of re-naming jellybean flavors (we had been at the airport about 8 hours at this point…) and Casey thought that he heard “concrete” as a suggested name and thought that was repulsive. We joked around for a bit that we should just go ahead and use concrete as a team name. When it came time for the June teams to name themselves during training, we immediately went back to concrete, but decided that it needed more significance than a miscommunication. Casey brilliantly explained the following: concrete is comprised of many elements. Each ingredient is different, and none is more important than the others. The substance requires a laborious mixing process, followed by adequate time to cure and set. But once it sets, it is a very strong mixture that can withstand a great amount of pressure. So it is with our team. We are each unique and bring valuable gifts to the family. But because of our differences, we will surely encounter conflict and turmoil. As this process continues, we will mesh together more solidly until we become a family that can withstand the issues and problems we will most certainly encounter on the Race.

A little bit about everyone:

Katey– Katey is absolutely beautiful both inside and out. She is

always looking out for other people, and often has to remind the rest of us when we fail to do so.

Sarah– Sarah has one of the sweetest spirits I’ve ever met. She brings fun and joy to us, and reminds us not to be quite so serious all of the time.

Casey– He is the hugger of the group. I think I will have learned how to be a hugger as well by the end of this adventure. While he isn’t a leader by title, he definitely helps lead our group by his Godly example of daily living and dependence on God.

Esther– She is our fearless leader. Not only does she lead us spiritually, but communicates logistics with us as well. Her all-out love for Jesus is a daily inspiration to me.

Mark– He’s our amazing media man. He knows how to work

anything computerized. He always brings a smile to our faces through his stories and jokes.

Cricket– Cricket is an amazingly strong woman of God. Her caring spirit and selfless attitude bless me daily.

L to R: me, Esther, Casey, Sarah, Cricket, Katey, and Mark
