While in Nepal we were given the opportunity to help build a school in another village. To reach this village we would have about a 3-hour hike during which we would have to cross a river 12 times. The morning of Valentines Day we grabbed our bags and loaded a bus, which would take us to our starting point.
Hiking through the valleys in Nepal and up the mountains was amazing, all 21 of us wading through the water in awe of this journey, and doing what we could to keep from falling into the cold river. We reached the top to find a small little home, two buildings, one being the kitchen and another a loft with two bedrooms. An ideal set up in my mind. It was a remote get away, no electricity no distractions… just nature. Taking advantage of the last bit of sunlight we set up our tents, built a fire and dinner was served shortly after. Here in Nepal our diet has consisted of the three main carb groups, rice, noodles and potatoes plus a new favorite… pop chips. On occasion we would add in some water buffalo, which we each cooked over the open fire.
That evening the men of our squad had prepared a little Valentine’s Day treat. Holy Communion, to remind of us true love. Our father loved each of us so very much that he sent his son to die for us; because of this love we are each free of sin. We love because he first loved us. Christ is the example which we should imitate when loving others… not Noah from "The Notebook" (as sweet he might be). Jesus is truth.
Often times I get caught up chasing a fairy tale, wanting that happy ending and focused on finding my prince charming. Always on the lookout for a chance meeting to fit into my desired romantic comedy of a life, I forget that I am in the midst of the best fairy tale. A prince left his kingdom to come and rescue me and is now preparing a place for me to live with him in eternity. Much like the frustrating movies when the girl continues to over look the right guy and his love because she is focused on the "bad boy," God is pursuing me daily despite my cold shoulder. The hike through the mountains, the ministry, the food (love carbs), the cool air, the fall colors, the new team mates and friends I get to spend the month with; all of it is God showing his love for me.
We ended the evening singing praise to God under his starry sky, a beautiful Valentine's Day full of love
