Everything I’m Packing for my
11 Month Journey
Many people find it hard to believe that I can fit everything I need for 11 months into one bag. The saying “Less is more” very much applies to World Race packing. Here is a look into my pack to see what essentials I am taking on my journey and also showing you the magic behind compacting everything.
*the asterisks means it’s not in the picture but I am bringing it.
To start: I have a 50 liter osprey internal frame pack that I bought from REI. My day pack (aka book-bag/carry-on) is a High Sierra backpack that I got from Costco. I’m bringing one pair of HI-TEC sandals and one pair of Asics running shoes.
Dissection of my pack…
Clothes:
2 pairs of shorts, 2 spandex shorts, 1 tankini, 2 regular bras, 3 sports bras, 18 underwear, 4 pair of socks, 2 scarves, 1 pair of jeans, 1 tank top, 3 t-shirts, 1 long sleeve shirt, 3 dresses, 1 long skirt, 1 pair of yoga pants, 2 pairs of capris, 1 rain jacket, 1 hooded zip up, 1 northface fleece.
And ALL that compacts into this…
Now let’s check out what else will fit in my pack…
What is all that? Big Agnes Synthetic sleeping bag (blue compression sack), passage 2 tent with rainfly and footprint (green compression bag), Synmat sleeping pad (orange bag), cocoon blow up pillow (small green bag), poles and stakes for my tent (brown bag), ziplock bag full of water flavoring, cosmo headlamp, 1 bottle of jungle juice bug spray, double sided bag of clothes (blue zip storage bag), and a medium eagle creek packing cube that contains all my undergarments.
*still need to get a sleeping liner, also bringing a black construction size trash bag as a water proofer and whatever else it may come in handy for throughout the race. I have sunblock shoved on one of the side pockets of the bag as well. Cliff bars will also be packed wherever possible. I’m bringing a Hennessy hammock system that is only 1.14 lbs. and a few square inches.
That’s the contents of my pack, now let’s take a look inside my day pack…
This is the backpack I will take as my carry on for traveling. It contains:
Columbia rain jacket, zip up hoodie, yoga pants, Ziploc of medical items, baby wipes, water flavoring packets, paper clips, 4 nail polishes, an eye mask, lots of bobby pins and hair ties, 2 sporks, my toiletry bag (deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup, etc), travel size reference bible, the message bible, 4 journals, 2 adapter/converters, and my Windows surface 2 laptop/tablet.
*terabyte external hard drive, solar charger, my phone, ipod, extra chargers, more cliff bars J, photos of family and friends, extra passport pictures, my passport
That’s it! My pack weighs about 25ish pounds and my book bag weighs about 11ish pounds.
I tried to pack as light as possible because that’s the advice I have received from former racers but I still feel like I have all my essentials with me.
If you have any advice on anything else I should bring please leave a comment. I still have lots of space I can use in my bags.
