After climbing to the top of a high rock overlooking the beautiful Toccoa Falls, I had a few choices….
1. When looking down below at the water, I was tempted to take that leap! Enjoy the thrill and rush of the fall which could result in a not so fun ending if the water wasn’t deep enough once reached
2. In the case that the water was deep enough to break my fall, I could enjoy the day playing with some friends and splashing around like an above ground pool commercial. But, just like the seemingly fun above ground pool (no offense to those who snorkel for neon rings) the fun can only last so long before it becomes the mundane and the top of that rock regains its appeal.
So my other options…
3. Turn around from the wonder of that waterfall and step by step, facing the danger of wet boulder each inch, slowly climb my way back… As I recall my past and desire to go back to the place I knew well.
And….
4. If I were to be scared by a bug even while fully realizing how magnificent it is to be in such a glorious place- if my feet were not stable, my fear of an ant could result in a painful fall.
If it isn’t clear by now, my rock is where I am fully present with God and living in his purpose for my life. From this place, there is great temptation to have a quick thrill of self, to join in on what looks to be so fun, but would leave me empty. My choices every day could result in being back in the common place, one decision or step at a time, losing sight of the beauty. Or I could be faced head on with something that is tiny in comparison to what got me there, but without balance- I could fall.
The best part about my real life rock is that it wasn’t me that endured the climb. I simply got picked up and dropped from a helicopter in a fall that was uncomfortable, and required me to trust that parachute that was slapped on me.
Jesus was crucified with the view so that I might be able to enjoy life eternally from atop that rock.
