PRATICAL WAYS TO HELP

HAITI- You’ve most likely seen the tv specials and concerts, the “text a certain word to a certain number and donate $10, or the special songs redone to sell cds and raise money to send it to Haiti to help all of the earthquake victims. It pains me to say that truthfully, they haven’t seen a dime or that yet. Or should I say, Goude.

The government is holding all of the money raised from those fundraisers. They will continue to hold it until they find a way to hand it out that they agree with. Hum, let’s get going government, it’s been months since the earthquake and hundreds of thousands are hungry, homeless and still desperately hurting.

While money can’t fix everything I find myself frustrated that so many people have opened up their hearts, and wallets, and it seems like little has been done. RELEVANT Magazine did an amazing job in their June 2010 issue, of explaining in detail what Haiti looks like now, and what it will look like in the future. Please check this article out if you have a heart for Haiti. I read it before I arrived in Port-au-Prince and can attest that it is truthful and helped prepare me for what I was going into.

After living in Port-au-Prince for a month, hearing stories of loss as well as stories of hope and life, I wondered what more I could do. Then my thoughts turned to you, my faithful supporters and readers, so here are a 4 ways to make a big change.

1. PRAY-

It may seem like a little thing but it’s not! God is the God of the impossible! He is a healing, loving God.

Specific Prayer Requests:

Health- disease and poor sanitary conditions are common, Protection, Provision- Food and drinking water, Shelter- they are just starting to clear out a lot of the rubble, thousands will be in tents for at least a year. Pray for healing- physical and emotional!

Pray that God’s glory will be shown. Pray for revival! Pray for the missionaries and pastors!

2. If you’d like to support Haiti financially :

SAMARITAINS PURSE

Samaritans’ Purse is doing an amazing job. Squad mates of mine took the supplies that Samaritans’ Purse provided to build over 50 houses, and that’s just in 3 weeks.

The money you donate to Samaritans Purse goes into buying supplies for these houses as well as other projects they have going on in Haiti.

HANDS and FEET by AUDIO ADRENALINE

If you are a music buff you have most likely heard of the amazing, Audio Adrenaline. A band that has had a following since the early 1990’s is still proclaiming the word of God around the world. They started the non-profit, Hands and Feet. Currently they are breaking ground on what will be a beautiful, well taken care of Christian orphanage about an hour and a half out of Port-au-Prince. My squad mates, Team Hinds feet, worked and lived with the orphans that will benefit from this generosity. Please check out their blogs if you’d like to know more about their time at the orphanage.

3. If you, your church, or organization feel better about donating supplies then donating financially please consider:

The Tent Cities of Port-au-Prince

Our pastor, Pastor J.C. Slyvin has a dream to see this city rebuilt. In the past he has personally taken in over 20 orphans and opens up his home to his church family at any hour of the day. He is a man of integrity and love and I have no doubt that God is using him boldly in Port-au-Prince.

After the earthquake he rented a truck, procedded to the U.N and American Red Cross stations and picked up tarps and supplies and started building a tent city from scratch. Now the tent city is about 1,500 people in this one tent city alone. He had an orphanage that was destroyed in the quake and he is currently rebuilding that along with a church as he only has temporary building right now. He longs to see people fed and back on their feet. He has 30 people living with him, including 5 orphans, that share that vision. If you’d like to ship supplies down to help them in their efforts please consider mailing the following needed items to: PASTOR J. C. SLYVIN For MINISTRY USE IN THE TENT CITY, CHURCH AND ORPHANAGE

(ADDRESS TO COME ASAP, please check back in a week!)

Clothing- all articles of clothing in all sizes (including undergarments), Shoes of flip flops, Durable Plastic plates and silverware (not the kind you throw away), sunglasses or hats.

THANK YOU!!! It means so much to me to have people pray for and love these beautiful Haitian people!

***These are all my personal views and opinions on what I saw that worked, and what didn’t. If you have a charity in Haiti , or elsewhere, that you love please stick with them as I’m sure they are doing wonderful work!***
