“Just Another Malaria Monday, whaowhao

That’s right! Welcome to the reality of the travel. Despite taking my Doxy, sleeping in bug nets and tents and wearing deet repellent, I still got bit by that stinkin female Malaria fly…..

I have Malaria….

I went to get tested after having diaheria and Aubrie, my beautiful teamate had gotton diagnosed the day before. Peter, our contact took a group to the doctor. The clinic was located in a small remote village a short drive away from our home. They priked my finger and put the blood on what looks like a small pregnancy test. The results came out negative for both Kayla and me so we were happy about that.

Then Peter told us we had to go to another clinic to get another malaria test done. It was totally a “honor your contact moment as we sent everyone else back to the house and we haeded to another village We arrived at a little orphange compound where they had one building that was set aside to be a clinic/ lab. Anna Maria, the doctor, was so kind to take us after hours. She pricked our fingers again and we chatted, laughed and waited as the results came out. “Kayla is negative, but Laura is positive.

I totally laughed at that point. What?! I actually have Malaria! Crazy! It proceeded into a crazy 2 day bus ride, complete with goats on the roof and chickens in the seat in front of me. But we got safelty to Joberg South Africa where we were taken in by a loving family and spent the week relaxing and getting better! All my love and thanks to Peter, Hesta, Bernadette, Xaria, Joyce and Shane for taking amazing care of us and showing us the deep love of God. I love you guys! That’s my malaria adventure… on to new experiences that don’t include malaria symptoms…lol

I’m so thankful for all of you!

All my love, Laura Skye
