I was so blessed to be working in Baby House 1 with the “Big Babies aged 3 months to 1 year. I LOVED these 13 babies and were so blessed to love on them and care for them. We had 5 “Big Boys (8-12 months old) and 8 “Little Babies (3-7 months).
(Because of the adoption laws that are in place at Door of Hope we are not allowed to post pictures of the children online or post stories online about their past. I can show you these personally when I see you.)
Here’s a day in the life of a World Racer in South Africa:
6am: Wake up, shower, eat breakfast.
7am: Arrive at Baby House 1, wake babies up, give them each a bath, get them dressed and out to the living room to play.
8am: Feed “Big Boys cereal, babies their bottles.
9am-11am: Play with the babies, welcome local volunteers and visitors. Little babies will nap from 9:30 to 11. Big boys stay up.
11am: Give Big Babies their bottles, play. Get little babies up, play.
12pm: Big babies take a nap until 3. Little babies get a bottle. Play.
1:30pm: Little babies go to bed. Staff and volunteers take lunch.
3pm: All babies get up and are changed into their pajamas. Big boys eat baby food.
4-5pm: Little babies get bottles. Play.
6pm: Little babies go to bed. Big babies get bottles. I hand over my shift to the night staff.
Night staff will put the big boys to bed at 7pm. Then stay there until I get there the next morning for my 7am shift.
7pm, I go to Baby House 3 when I am living. The house is currently being used as a toddler house so I am greeted by 7 very excited toddlers. I grab dinner and go hide in our bedroom until feedback. Then bed at 9pm and the days go on.
