“We are a product of the choices we make. Not the circumstances that we face.”
How often do you let your circumstances determine how you feel? How you live your life? How you preserve yourself? This was an everyday occurrence for me. Even to this day, my circumstances still try to sneak in and control my attitude every now and then.
The race has helped in this specific area. I use to let my circumstances determine my feelings. However, on the race many different circumstances happen that are out of my control. I have had to learn to give up control, to stop depending on only myself and allow others to help.
I never thought that I was one who liked control but it’s been said when you think you don’t struggle with something, most likely, you do. You know what I mean?
This past month in Albania I determined that I needed to give up control. It’s hard as a teacher back home I would control many things on a daily basis. The things that I would control included the schedule, the lessons, classroom management and how I would spend my day once off of work. On the race it is completely different- most of the times you do not have control of how you spend your time, the money or what happens on a daily basis.
I almost didn’t sing up for the World Race due to the amount of money one would have to raise. This was another example of a circumstance that was outside of my control. Little did I know that God would use fundraising to build my trust in Him, allow myself to not be self-sufficient and to release control. Fundraising is outside of my control, I currently do not have a job that allows me to fund the year in the mission field. I have to not look at my circumstances but look towards the Father.
In the end, I choose to make a daily decision to not be stressed out or controlled by my circumstances but to live in peace by surrendering my life and day to the Lord.
