1. Don’t criticize the way things are done in foreign countries. A lot of people are preoccupied with surviving, leaving little time for the things we can afford to worry about in North America (esthetics, grumbling, political correctness, arguments over whether to eat Pizza Hut or McDonalds).  
  2. It’s okay that we’re all vastly different human beings. The body of Christ has many parts, a foot is obviously going to do a better job at being a foot than you if you were meant to be the mouth.
  3. Your body doesn’t suck, look at the way you haul that huge backpack around.
  4. Asia is built for little Asians, you are not a little Asian.      
  5. Some people who call you fat in foreign countries are merely observing, not insulting.
  6. The very vocal advertising strategies of Tuk-Tuk drivers in Cambodia are quite obnoxious.
  7. You will have to make time with the Lord, it doesn’t just happen.
  8. You have to fight to remain loyal to your God in this world, even among the brethren.
  9. You look white, but you are not American.
  10. Squatty Potties are a work-out…during a diarrhea stint you may get in about 20 intense squats per day.
  11. You don’t have to be scared of startlingly attractive men. You can talk to boys with impeccable bone structure & flawless hair and live to tell the tale.
  12. Orphans & street children are the most lovely, happy, curious, strong & hilarious kids you will ever meet in your life, & the unconditional love from children is one of the greatest gifts ever.
  13. You sweat SO MUCH, like too much. It’s gross.
  14. Food is wonderful & learning about it & experiencing it overseas has been such a treat.
  15. You can survive awkward silences.
  16. Coffee abroad is superior to coffee at home. Tim Horton’s has got nothing on the guys pouring coffee & tea on the streets of Asia.
  17. Sweetened condensed milk is a common thing overseas. Don’t ask me how Diabetes is not a common thing overseas.
  18. In the collective bad odor that is Indian atmosphere, stop & smell the henna & jasmine.
  19. Justice will one day be fully carried out by the Lord, do what you can alongside Him in the meantime even if it seems insignificant. Be an advocate & a voice for the voiceless.
  20. Prayer is beautiful & absolutely powerful.
  21. Every little thing…is gonna be alright.
  22. Laughing your arse off occasionally is vital. Also people not from Fort don’t commonly say arse, or many other things that you say in Fort. Fort is special.  
  23. The Word of God is the most valuable thing that you own.
  24. You don’t want a tattoo or piercing.
  25. Missions is not about heroism, inspiration or recognition.
  26. Teamwork in everyday life is really hard…just like family in everyday life is really hard.
  27. Insects are beautiful, but not delicious.
  28. You will rip your pants various times in the thigh area while trying to squeeze your hipz through Nepali bus aisles.
  29. You don’t have to prove yourself to anybody.
  30. Be at peace with others as far as it concerns you.
  31. Give thanks.
  32. Breaking down in tears on balconies in Thailand is very therapeutic.
  33. You do not have to compete, even if everyone else is. Bow out.
  34. Don’t eat mo:mo’s, or anything else when you have some horrible foreign gastrointestinal bug.
  35. Don’t fall for the powdered milk scam in Southeast Asia.
  36. Don’t wish away time.
  37. Don’t covet.
  38. Women in the sex industry are still women, amazing, valuable women. And they probably don’t want to be in the situation they’re in. Usually desperation or abduction forces them to turn their body into a marketable product.
  39. You will want to punch people in the face, but you shouldn’t.
  40. Learning to love the enemies of the oppressed is really, really difficult.
  41. Not everything has an explanation.
  42. The only sense that can be made in this world is rooted in God’s Truth.
  43. Hip, young backpackers & old, successful business men in bars need to hear about Jesus, too.
  44. Some of the best food in the world comes from terribly unhygienic carts on the street.
  45. Iced Thai Tea is truly the best beverage of all time. Bubble Tea is a close second.
  46. You are capable of ascending innumerable stairs multiple times a day to get to your room in your hostel. You are stronger than you think.
  47. Sing your heart out, even if you can never get alone to do it.
  48. Sometimes you don’t get to know the details. That’s what trust is for.
  49. A lot of other people don’t have it all figured out either.
  50. Music is a gateway for relationships.
  51. You love monsoons, is there anything better than basking in a downpour?
  52. You love the ocean.
  53. Asia is pretty darn awesome.
  54. Asian women are super adorable/fashionable/beautiful.
  55. You really want to freak out when you see whitening creams on the shelves in drugstores in Asia & it makes you think of bronzers & fake tanners on the shelves back home. The beauty industry is out to get us all.
  56. You can live without your fashion.
  57. The coolest glasses, or ”specs” as they say in Asia, are found in Asia.
  58. Budgeting is very, very hard, & you will spend more money then you thought you would, not because of indulgence…because of elephants & waterfalls & birthdays & clothing requirements for certain ministries & other unexpected expenses.
  59. Spreading yourself too thin is a really bad idea.
  60. Giving honest answers & opinions & sometimes saying ”No” is a very good idea.
  61. Chopsticks & hands are so much more fun to eat with than forks & spoons.
  62. Cats are allowed in restaurants in Asia. You do not like cats.      
  63. Facebook & Instagram are NOT real life. At all.
  64. Music is a beautiful escape.
  65. God delivers people from demons.
  66. No one but God has the right to tell you who you are.
  67. Ask the locals. Always.
  68. The tongue has the power of life & death, Proverbs 18:21. Words are weighty.
  69. Rooftops are great places to hang out. Sometimes you can see the stars when the pollution clears.
  70. Buffalo milk is not delicious at all.
  71. Spend less time on the internet.

  73. Be honest, be humble, be holy.
  74. Drink a lot of water.
  75. Eat 20 satay skewers with peanut sauce if the opportunity presents itself. The repercussions are worth it.

  80. Bloom where you’re planted.
  81. Always carry toilet paper with you, it won’t be in bathrooms most of the time.

  86. Crossing the street is legitimately risky in foreign cities.
  87. Don’t assume the worst.
  88. Love your family well, no matter how far away you are. FaceTime is a gift.
  89. Don’t buy everything, but it’s not excessive to buy something.
  90. Embrace your weirdness, even if nobody else does. Lol.
  91. Languages are really hard, but effort is really appreciated.
  92. Go where you must to be alone with God. Jesus withdrew to the lonely place.
  93. Art can be made anywhere, with anything.
  94. You don’t have to be a member of The Wiggles, an elementary schoolteacher, or a Little League Coach to be a ”kid person”, you love kids.
  95. Don’t let the extraordinary become mundane.
  96. If you don’t opt into refinement you can carry your excess baggage all around the world & back home.
  97. Laboring & sweating to do simple things like get your clothes clean is an invaluable lesson.
  98. Money is nothing. Always share & give, what you have belongs to the Lord anyways.
  99. You don’t need a man to be safe.
  100. The Lord is near, always.
