That is what our African pastor, Alex, told the congregation last night. As I’ve mentioned in my previous blog we have been concerned with the balance between evangelism and discipleship at our church here in Africa. Like I’m sure many people have expereinced in Africa, the church sometimes sees the world as a numbers game. The goal is to preache the gospel, have people pray a sinners prayer, and move on to the next person. This mentality has caused the church in Africa to be a mile wide and an inch deep. I shared this concern with two of our pastors, Alex and Tony. They asked me to preach on discipleship.
Last night I gave what I believed was a simple sermon about the Great Commission. We went through Jesus’ example of building up disciples and I encouraged the church to simply follow Jesus’ example. After I got done preaching, Pastor Alex stepped up and talked about his efforts to host tent meetings. He has tried numerous times in the past to get a great speaker to come so many people would be saved, but he believes God has thwarted those plans because he wants the church to be discple makers. He said “I don’t care about numbers” and promised the church that they would be more focused on discipling the current members and all new believers. Only God can change someone’s approach so quickly. And only God can follow through with the plans to institute a discipleship program. Please pray that God continues to work here in Uganda at Christ Miracle Center. We have at least 3 new believers (2 of them of the Muslim faith) who are itching to be discipled. God is good, pray he continues to work.
PS I tried to post this on Thursday but the internet was messing up, sorry some of you got some updates and saw nothing was there.
