Nowadays, most people only believe things if they see it. In order to believe something is real, they have to see it with their own two eyes. But what if I told you that believing can come from hearing too?
A lot of people don’t believe in God because they can’t see him. How can they put their trust in someone who isn’t standing right in front of them? I can’t even trust in the people that I see, why in the world would I our my trust in someone I don’t see? Great question. And some Christians would answer by saying that God is like the wind. Even though you can’t see him, you can feel him. That is very true, BUT there is more to it.
Pretend you’re in a big crowd. Lots of people swarming about you and you’re looking for your friend that you’re meeting up with. There are so many people that cloud your view you don’t even know where to look. Then all of a sudden you hear your friend calling your name. Even though you can’t see your friend you can hear them and know they’re there; because you heard them and you know them by their voice. God’s the same way. Too many times I find myself trying to search for God with my own eyes and ignoring his voice. I say he’s not there because I can’t find him, but if I took to the time to listen to his voice I would hear him calling me and believe he was there. And if I took the time to know him, I would hear him.
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” -Romans 10:17
Here’s the cool thing; in order to see God I have to hear him. In order to hear him I have to get to know him. In order to get to know him I have to spend time with him. If I want to see his beauty, his majesty, his glory, I have to listen to him. Because when I listen to him I hear what he has to say. And what he has to say reflects his heart. So when I hear him and I see his heart, I see him.
One of the hardest things for me is paying attention. I am a hardcore daydreamer and get distracted pretty easily. And in top of that I am NOT an auditory learner. Whatsoever. Man does the Lord love to stretch me. But it’s for my own good and his glory and it’s what’s important and what I need to keep in mind.
“He who has ears, let him hear” -Matthew 11:15
Sometimes I just love how blunt Jesus is. He literally says plain as day those with attentive ears, hear. So many times when Jesus taught in parables to crowds they would become confused, but few understood and those were the ones who had ears to hear. And not just to hear, but to listen. To soak in. And that’s how I want to be. I want to know the Lords voice so well that I don’t hesitate to do what he asks me, but do it immediately. To stop fighting and concede and obey because I want and desire to obey because I love him.
“…The sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own he goes before them and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice…My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me” -John 10:3-4,27
We follow because we know. We follow because we hear. We follow because we see.
Thanks for the time and the read. You rock.
