Real Life Training Camp: Day 4

After an overnight at one of the largest homeless shelters in Georgia, the Real Lifers have finally made it to camp, our final location before they head out to their countries! We have started some training sessions today, and will continue with more teachings and worship tonight.

I also (with my trusty roommate Patrice) facilitated a friendly competition of our famous DANCE COMPETITION!

Nothing prepares you for heading onto the mission field like a dance competition……….okay well maybe not, but this is always a great opportunity for teams to loosen up, be creative and just have fun! We ALWAYS have a dance competition at every Real Life and World Race camp. We are certainly not all business!
Answers to today’s questions:

Q: How many participants are in the most recent Real Life Training Camp?

A: Including team leaders there are just under 50 participants at this Real Life training. This spring we will have nearly four times that!!!!

Q: How often are training camps held?
A: We currently have 9 training camps scheduled for 2011. These are separate camps for the Real Life, Ambassador and World Race programs. The majority of them happen between May-July, which is are VERY busy time for us in the Training Dept.!

Q: Do Real Life participants ever take part in the World Race at a later date?
A: We find that many Real Life participants actually are initially interested in the World Race, but are not yet old enough. Real Life is for ages 18-21 whereas the World Race is ages 21-35. We have had Real Life participants come back to go on the World Race or get involved with other projects with AIM. Like one group of Real Life participants returned home from Kenya and have committed to return to Kenya for TWO YEARS by spearheading a program called Kenya Initiative. Q: Why do you think it is harder for young
men to follow the Lord into missions, you see all the time that the
majority of missions teams World Race and Real Life as well as others
are women. What can we as a church do to encourage our young men to
step into this role?

A: You ask an INCREDIBLY big question! I am absolutely interested in answering, but feel like it will be best to devote an actual blog to that. Thank you for asking, because I would LOVE to share more of my thoughts and ideas about this. Stay tuned in the next few days for a full blog entry answering your question!

Q: Are you taking over this position from someone else or is it a new role at AIM?
A: The position I am currently in as a Training Coordinator is a new position that has been created for me and my fellow World Race Alumn Josh Woodmansee. Together we will be taking on many of the responsibilities that Jimmy McCarty has been working on.  Because the programs continue to grow AIM continues to bring “more hands on deck” to continue to set people up for success on the mission field.
