I realized when I signed up for this thing called the world race that I would miss food from home. I thought I would take a minute to tell you just what those things are. And this is the world race, so it will be done in WR fashion.
Top 11 Foods I Miss from America
-
Diet Doctor Pepper: I was addicted before I left the states, so it might not be a bad thing, but there are days that would be better if one of those cans were in my hand.
-
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy: Almost all food that is served here is served with rice, and never mashed potatoes. There are certain days that I would do a lot for a bowl of mashed potatoes, gravy, with salt and pepper.
-
Ranch Dressing: Real, homemade ranch is basically impossible to find in the world. It’s a staple in my diet in the states so I have missed it a lot this year.
-
Flavored Coffee Creamer: You can’t find anything remotely close to flavored coffee creamer on the race. I’m all for a great cup of coffee, but often, an average cup will do with some flavored coffee creamer.
-
Brewed Coffee: Outside of the beautiful mecca of coffee called Starbucks that has made its way around the world, you are often served instant coffee made with hot water. It’s not the same. It will never be the same. I promise.
-
Chick-fil-a: Any World Racer who lives in the land of Chick-fil-a prior to coming on the race misses this precious little slice of heaven for 11 months. Sandwiches, nuggets, waffle fries, and the all-important Chick-fil-a sauce doesn’t exist outside of the continent of North America.
-
Biscuits and Gravy, with a side of sausage: This makes me look southern, probably, but the truth is, I’m okay with that. It’s a staple breakfast in Alabama, and I’ve craved it A LOT on the race.
-
Bacon: Real life, one food you don’t find here often is bacon. It’s not commonly served, often not on the menu, and seemingly impossible to find. What I would do for a good BLT in Asia.
-
Sonic Ice: This again might make me southern, but my favorite ice in the world is a good cup of ice from the Sonic not too far from my house. Ice is a rarity on the race in general, but chewy ice is seemingly impossible to find outside of a North American hospital or Sonic.
-
Crystal Light/ Drink Mix: this one has been fixed by a precious little trip called PVT where my parents brought me more drink mix from America, but it is not sold outside of the states, as far as I can tell, especially the individual ones that you can put in a water bottle. It makes water the usually doesn’t taste great taste much better, its just impossible to find out here.
-
Lasagna: Can you imagine something with me? Homemade lasagna, with homemade sauce coming out of the oven when you walked in the door from school? The smell of garlic bread fills the room, and you hear the ice clink into glasses to be served with sweet tea. You don’t find that much in the world.
It is just 3.5 months away from my chance to go home and eat these foods. Probably over and over again. ?
