Disclaimer: Everyone in this story is OK! No need to get worried; it's all part of the adventure J
The morning started off like a "typical" Sunday in India. I woke up in a dark and quiet room. As I surveyed the scene, I noticed everyone was still sleeping. I decided I would do my devo on the roof so I could have some light as well as just be alone with God (because alone time never happens). I tiptoed up the stairs to the roof and found the "perfect spot" against the ledge watching the sun rise. It wasn't five minutes later that I saw something move out of the corner of my eyes. As I cautiously glanced up, I noticed two monkeys walking past me. Now, these monkeys are not the fun monkeys you see in the zoo. They are scavengers that are nothing but mean. Immediately, I wanted run for my life, but I knew that was one of the worst ideas. Instead, I sat very still and continued reading. Within minutes, the baby was not satisfied just sitting on the ledge. He wanted to run and play. Lucky for me, I was a foreign object that he wanted to check out! The baby strolled my way and before I knew it he was by my side. As the monkey touched my arm, a million thoughts went through my head- I didn't get my rabies shot (should have listened to my parents), if I yell loud enough could someone hear me (probably not but it was a good try), I'm going to be the first one in the hospital (I've very accident prone so this would be expected)! The baby quickly got uninterested and walked the opposite direction. I had a sense of relief until the momma appeared just seconds later. When I turned to look at her, we were staring eye to eye. At this point, I went into freak out mode! I slowly stood up and starting making my way towards the stairs. The monkeys were right on my heels so I picked up the pace. With every step I took, the farther away the apartment seemed to be. The baby jumped on the hand rail and batted at me as I sprinted down the stairs. The mother followed behind me making hissing noises. Getting back to the apartment door seemed like it took hours. I rushed in the door and slammed it behind me. I was finally safe!!
Come to find out even locals have not had an encounter like this with monkeys. I mean go big, then go home! It was definitely an experience that I wouldn't want to have again. It does make for a good story though.
