“You are sentenced to prison!” This phrase is what tons of
people all over Mozambique hear on a daily basis. There is no freedom under the
law. No matter the evidence or even the stories, hundreds of innocent people
are sent to prison for weeks, months, and even years waiting for a trial to
prove themselves.

Every Wednesday a couple of our contacts go to the local
prison to do ministry. This past week, I was privileged to go with them and
experience this lifestyle first hand. As we parked the car and headed to the
gate, an officer just opened the door and allowed us in. They did not ask for
an ID, do any kind of background check, or even make us go through security.
When we walked through the gates, it looked like a small community. Women were
sewing, men were in the woodshed, and still others were walking around. We were
met by four women that were full of joy. As they walked up to give me a hug, I
thought to myself, “How can they be joyful in a prison?” Our contact led us to
a small open building with chairs and a chalk board where she teaches them
Portuguese. The four women eagerly followed with folders and pencils in hand. (Not
only are they joyful, but they are excited to learn). In the span of one hour,
I got to work hand in hand with a lovely lady, teaching her Portuguese, telling
her about the Bible, sharing Christ’s love with her, and praying for her. At
the very end, the newest one accepted Christ into her life!!!

These women are something special. Their stories blow me
away. Some of them have committed murder, but have now given their lives to
Christ. Others are patiently waiting a trial to prove their innocence to the
judge. No matter their circumstances, God’s love is in that place. He is the
ultimate Judge of our lives, and the people in the prison are starting to see
this.

FREEDOM!” 2 Cor 3:17
