A different kind of normal

Life outside America is nothing like
I could imagine. Everything I have been used to for the past 22 years is gone
and a “new normal” has entered my life. As much as I miss the comforts of my
own home, family, friends, and lifestyle, I am excited to live as others around
the world life. With all that being said, I’m going to let you see a little
glimpse of my life the past month.

It’s normal when…

You can’t flush your toilet paper
down the toilet but instead you put it in the trash can or throw it out the
window

You take a bucket shower with COLD
water

You wear the same outfit 2, 3, or
maybe even 4 days in a row

You hand wash clothes by hand and put
them on a line to dry

You smell because you have not
showered in a few days

You fit six people in an auto
rickshaw which normally fits three people

You see two males walking down the
street holding hands (and they aren’t gay)

You are told lunch is at 1 and you
don’t actually eat until 2:30

You sleep with ear plugs because the
person that sleeps next to you snores

You have people watching you sleep,
eat, read, nap, etc. (it’s like you are a zoo exhibit)

You use a squatty potty on a normal
basis

You have to take toilet paper with
you wherever you go

You start speaking with a 3rd
grade vocabulary, because the translator can’t even understand what you are
saying

You have to run to catch the train,
because it only stops for 1 minute and 14 seconds

You give your left over rice to
teammates

You eat ice cream and chocolate more
than you do at home, because you need comfort foods about every other day

You take pictures with strangers on a
daily basis

You cry weekly (oh wait, I think
that’s just me)
