“That’s the way we’ve always done it.”

That one phrase can mess up everything. It’s complacent. It’s what we know. There’s no need for change or growth.

Sometimes we look at things, situations, and people in the same way we always have. “She’s just like that sometimes.” “I always put the plates in the dishwasher first.” “The Cubs are never going to win.” Those things are comfortable, and we believe them, even if they aren’t true! (The Cubs WILL win the World Series. That was a bad example…)

He really, really doesn’t. God calls us to build our character to be more like Him.

In the last month and a half since starting the Race (WHAT?!), I have tried to confront many those ideas. God calls us to be critical of the norms in our lives. Jesus did NOT follow the social norms of his time. He was different, and I think He was pretty okay with that. He didn’t have the desire to be the same. He was God’s son, and he was not put on this earth to go along with the crowd.

I want to be more like Jesus. I want to change. Here’s some things I am working on:

1. I am trying to not just “put my time in” when I study the Bible.

2. I want to be intentional in every conversation about God or anything else.

3. I understand God on a surface level, but I want to know Him deeply.

4. I want to see church as more than just a sermon and some worship music. I want to see it as a community for God.

5. I want to continue to step out and confront the things that I accept as facts that may not actually be.

6. I will strive to accept people’s feedback about my life and use it to think critically about what I believe.

If you want to grow in your life, you have to confront the hard things. You have to think hard about what your life is, and look for the things that you’ve just accepted. God calls us to a different life. He calls us to step out. He wants us to have a deep, meaningful relationship with Him, and I am not going to let comfort and complacency get in the way of that.
