First Doctors visit was a success!

So let me tell you about these annoying little bugs that will get ya when you can’t even see them. My team and I are convinced they are these bugs called “noseeums”- haha yes that is a name they are called-you can look them up 🙂

Where we were in Colombia and here in Quito we don’t have a problem with bugs. I have not once had to use bug spray.

A week and ½ ago my team and I went to this beautiful town called Mindo, the cloud forest. We went zip lining through the mini jungle and it was breathtaking but…this is where these little bugs attacked. For some reason we did not think to wear bug spray. Our ankles and some of the girls legs were covered. These bugs are very sneaky and I guess bite in groups.

These things are beyond itchy. Some of the girls had wayyy better self-control than I did. To me, the itching was unbearable. I thought it would get better in a few days but mine kept getting worse and would keep me up at night. My ankles are now swollen, the redness got bigger and the pain has increased but I am surviving

Last night I continued to wet cloths with cold water and wrap my feet. I could not sleep at all so when my teammate Whitney said she was going to the doctors for a bad cough and needed someone to go with, I took that opportunity to go see a doctor for these bites.

Turns out, I have an infection and have to take three medications-antibiotics, medicine to stop the itch and pain medication. I also found out that when you scratch bug bites, bacteria from your fingernails can enter your skin. Ooooops.

The clinic here was super easy to get to and super easy to just walk in and get medicine.  We barely waited and the medication was ready right away and everyone was super friendly.

Also, they didn’t have enough of my antibiotic so they told me I have to buy more at a pharmacy. We found one across the street and I was able to just tell them what I wanted and they gave it to me without any hassle. It was great!

All in all, the lessons I learned from this and hopefully you will too if you are on The World Race, going to be or you are planning to travel…
