I came to Africa and I knew it would be completely different from Asia, but other than that I didn’t know what to expect. Malawi is different than any other place I have been to. There is dirt and dust everywhere and my feet are constantly dirty. Even though people here do not live in a well established country as America, they are always exuding joy and happiness. They wake up every morning with hope and happiness. People are seeking the Lord and have an abundance of faith and hope in Jesus. Though they may have little they know God is their provider.
“My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing my God cannot do.”
These are some lyrics from a song we have taught and sung with kids from Good Hope School here in Lilongwe. These lyrics ring true to what people believe here in Malawi. Children yell these lyrics and believe in what they say. Adults walk in this faith and hope daily. They love being encouraged and knowing that God is for them, therefore no one can be against them.
The widows we visit begin every visit with dancing and singing. Though they have been through rough trials they know and accept the joy that God has given them. We share our testimonies and encourage them with what the word says, but they share their testimonies and encourage us also.
As we walk through the village we are greeted with children with huge smiles and silly giggles. They yell and chant anytime we are near them. They are not shy about grabbing our arms and holding our hands while we are walking to wherever we are going. No matter how old or young, how rich or poor, or what trials they go through or have gone through, people of Malawi live an exuberant life.
“Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?” James 2:5
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
This verse from 1 Thessalonians is a perfect example of how a Malawian lives their life everyday. It has been worth it to live in a dirty and dusty environment to see true joy, faith, and hope from the Lord. Even though we are here to minister to others I have been ministered to everyday by the people of this country. To live in an environment that is centered around faith and hope is contagious and has helped me in my relationship with the Lord.
I would love to stay on the race and see what else the Lord has to show me and teach me. I am only a couple thousand away from being fully funded! Please continue praying for me and my team and the people I am encountering everyday!
