This week, my goal was to find manzanas (apples) for the kids. They are out of season here, so they are a special treat. The kids kept asking for them (some how they found out that I had stashed some in my room last week).
Since they are out of season they are a bit spendy. I remember telling myself after I bought them the first time that ‘I won’t be doing that again.’ And that’s when God laughs. For those who like details- baby apples are 6 for $3.00 USD. How do you do that when pineapples are 2 for $.90 USD?
But like I said, God laughed. He had another plan for me and the kids.
This month, God has been reminding me of His view on generosity. Ironically as I see my finances dwindle from not working for a year now.
I’ve realized that its hard for me to continue being charitable when I know the money won’t be replaced (at least not right away). In my heart I feel like there is something unwise about giving when its not being replenished. And maybe that’s true, to an extent, but God and I both know that apples are not going to break the bank, neither is supplying for peoples needs when I have more than plenty. This is when God says- “Trust ME! I will continue to provide for you.” WOW!
Deuteronomy 24:12-13 “If the man is poor (that you are borrowing from), do not go to sleep with his pledge in your possession. Return his cloak to him by sunset so that he may sleep in it. Then he will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the Lord your God.”
If God counts following His command that He put in place (I see it as the bare minimum) as a charitable act, how much more meaningful would an act of charity be to Him if He didn’t have to ask?
I also see God’s incredible love for the poor. If we don’t see them, He still does and will point them out to us to take care of them, like these children who more than anything in the world right now, just want an apple. This is God’s BEAUTY- justice for the unseen.
My biggest prayer request right now is to continue being generous- trusting God with my finances and looking at the money He has blessed me with as a means to bless others, take advantage of the incredible quiet time and be proactive with the time I have left with the kids.
