They Told Him He Couldn’t
This month we have spent most of our time in the streets of Sunyani. Evangelizing, if I’m being honest it’s not my favorite thing. This particular day we were not held to our teams but we were able to just walk and talk to whoever we felt lead to talk to.
That’s when I met Bennet.
Bennet had just graduated university and was working as a secretary for the government. Here in Ghana, men must serve in some type of government job before they can choose their own type of work. Bennet studied accounting, so when he told me he was working as a secretary I was a little puzzled. I proceeded to ask why he wasn’t doing something with accounting, and he said “because here in Ghana you must have power and money to get where you want to go.” I asked him what his dream was and he replied “I don’t have any”.
He didn’t have power or money so there was no sense in having any dreams.
My heart sank in that moment.
He was raised in a community that told him he wasn’t good enough to have his own business as an accountant, and now that’s what he believes; he is not good enough. I reminded him that the only person who can decide who is enough is Jesus.
I prayed with him and said goodbye.
Now, when I go evangelize, it has become so much more than just walking around inviting people to church. Some days I have the honor of introducing my friend Jesus to these people, some days I get to pray with strangers but today I had the privilege to encourage my brother Bennet to dream big.
I walked away, reflecting on my life. What are my dreams and am I doing anything to pursue them?
When I was little. My dreams consisted of:
- Graduate High School
- Get into college
- Join the Army
- Become a nurse
- Get married
- Have a family
These days my dreams look a little different.
With new seasons of life comes change, growth and room for even bigger dreams.
Next on my list, is going back to nursing school, getting married and starting a family. The timeline of my dreams may be out of my control, but I’ll never stop dreaming.
There will be plenty of people in your life that will tell you, you can’t accomplish something, there is not enough time, you do not have enough money or in Bennet’s case power.
Regardless of where you fall, I encourage you to “Never give up on a dream because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway” ~Earl Nightingale
So I’ll as you the same question, what are your dreams and what are you doing to pursue them?
