“Sponsor a child”

It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do, so much so that it’s written on every bucket list and dream board I’ve ever made. Yet there was always an excuse that prevented me from going through with it: “I’m in university, I don’t have the money”, “I’m about to move to a different country and I’m not sure what will happen”, “I don’t know which organization is best and whether the money will be used properly”, and so on and so on. I’ve used these excuses for so long that I actually started believing they were good reasons to not even try, at least up until about two weeks ago . . .

My team spent the beginning of this month in Southern Brazil at Home of the Good Shepherd, a home for children whose parents are unable to care for them as decided by the court. We got a close-up look at how the Home works and insight as to how the never-ending costs are met, by the grace of God. I saw how much the ministry really does rely on the generosity of others, and I was encouraged by how everything that has been given is stewarded so well.

As we helped glue the kids’ sponsor letters and their translations together one morning, it became clear to me that I needed to stop talking and start doing. What had I been waiting for? Suddenly no excuse seemed good enough. This was something that God had put on my heart long ago. Every day that I had put it off was another day that more and more children were finding themselves in need and at the mercy of others.

And so, after so many people have so generously supported my eleven months of missions, I’ve been given an opportunity to do the same for a child who has lived through more brokenness in four short years than most people go through in a lifetime. No more excuses. It’s time to take action.
