I’ve been reading a lot of poetry before going to bed these days. YES, OKAY I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. But it takes the mind off the day without allowing it to get caught up in a full story. Best case scenario.
Some of my feedback from my team has been that I am good to recognize the beauty in creation. I see the wonder in life and marvel in creation, especially being abroad. But they recognized in me the struggle to acknowledge the Creator behind it all.
This morning we were having team quiet time and I listened to the song “Rising Tide” by On Earth, Michael Gungor’s (aka bae) instrumental stuff. I’d listened to his other songs, but this one was new. I was journaling and reading through Joshua throughout the song, but midway through I just had to stop and bask in the movement of the music. It felt like I was rising with the tide, undulating in the waves.
I felt the music, and I felt the Musician.
And from experiencing art, my response was art.
I wrote this poem trying to capture the un-capturable nature of God. Creating and sharing anything is nearly always vulnerable, but for some reason it doesn’t feel that way this time. Because a poem about God doesn’t have to be complete, comprehensible, or clever. It’s the perfect subject!
I wanted to share the poem. And also go listen to “Rising Tide” and be saturated in it.

“Euphonic epiphany”
God
Understanding not understood
In essence experience imagination intellect
Nothingness amidst oneness
Moving and mover
Story and storyteller
Gift and giver
Creation and creator
Life of life
Essence of essence
Music of music
In is was be now then
But of and —
Time space
Phonics physics
The exception to a rule
Sovereign in simplicity
Begin in breath
Instilled instructed interruptive interactive
Simultaneously is but not
Captured and free
Impossibly possible
Experienced fully but not in full
And part is full is not is glory is good is God
