For some reason, each European country we’ve been to has labeled things with “probably” in front of a phrase. “Probably the best beer in the world”, “Probably the best restauraunt in the world”, “Probably the best baby in the world”. Galway proudly represents itself as “Probably the best city in the world”, and I would have to agree.

Galway is right smack dab in the middle of the East coast of
Ireland – it’s the closest part of Europe to America that there is! A few days ago, all I knew
about this upcoming month was that I would be camping the whole time. This led me to
picture us somewhere in the middle of the woods in a small village. But, much
to my surprise, I landed in a place called Galway, voted “Ireland’s sexiest
city.” It’s definitely not in the middle of no-where.  Turns out we are camping in tents for the
month, but we are in a town called Salthill, which is right on the beautiful,
rocky coastline. Each morning I get to greet the awesome grey, puffy clouded
sky with a jog along the water. And as I look out into the sea, I know my
Marylander’s back home lie just on the other side of that water.  My heart gets flooded with prayers for you
guys. There’s nothing better than running along the Irish coastline while
talking to the Father about the people who delight my heart.

After only being in Galway for two days, I can already say
that this is probably the most intriguing place I’ve ever been to. Outside of
the enchantment of its bustling cobblestone sidewalks and the majestic
coastline, the people of Galway are ones that I feel so thrilled about working
with. I feel like I get these people. They are an
artistic community, a “hippie” culture – one that I’m already diving into. They live outside of the American dream
mindset – they do not live to work. The food is pretty bland (except desserts!)
– They don’t live to eat. Galwaegiens are a simple, humble people.

The past few days have been filled with an introduction to
Irish culture, religion, and the church we have come to serve. We have been
given absolutely amazing tutorials on evangelism, prayer, and healing – this is
not new stuff to us but being presented in such a simple, relevant, true way is
such a fresh and new thing. We could not be more blessed to have the contacts
from Discovery Church that we have here. Thank you Jesus! I am fully looking
forward to our ministry this month – outreach through lots of unique ways . Here are
some of the potential things that we will be doing:

Setting up face painting booths in the city streets

Loading a van up with tea and coffee to hand out to people
in the city

Standing on the corners with “Need Prayer?” tee shirts on

Leading youth group Bible studies

Handing out worship CD’s door to door
Much, much more!  Our friends at Discovery are very open to how we would like to approach outreach this month. This is really a neat thing for us!

There are 20 churches in Galway City, which sounds like a lot. Probably 15 of these are African churches with about 5 members each. There are 5 Christian churches in the city. Only 2 churches are seen in the community helping out and doing outreaches. Evangelism is seen as self centered in Ireland, so doing community projects is a way to help the town AND tell them why we care.

Please be praying for ministry this month – more to come about what exactly we’ll be doing!
