Christmas was very different this year. There was no tree, no decorations, no Christmas music playing on the radio non stop, and no snow. There was none of the typical traditions surrounding me here in the middle of an African summer.
On Christmas day we tried to help prepare a special lunch for the kids. I say “tried” because the girls here had to help us with everything. We’re a little clueless when it comes to preparing African food!
After lunch we handed out little goodie bags and bracelets that we’d made for every kid and watched The Grinch with them.
It was definitely not a typical Christmas but it was such a special day.
Not being surrounded by all the aspects of a Canadian Christmas really helped me focus on the true meaning of the day. I got to spend my day serving and giving instead of receiving.
God gave us the greatest gift ever through his son, Jesus. That’s the whole reason for Christmas. It’s not about the decorations or gifts and I think that that’s pretty awesome!
