At the beginning of this month, my entire squad met up in Lima, Peru for our first debrief. It was the end of month two and our squad coaches (Randy and Betsy) flew in from Georgia to meet with us. It is a time to evaluate teams and evaluate ourselves. I entered debrief near burnout and by the end of the first day of debrief, I had hit burnout. I couldn’t process anything that was happening; I couldn’t even remember it for the most part. I even began recording our nightly sessions so I could go back and listen to them later when I wasn’t so burnt out. I had shut everything down just to survive. I was apathetic, had not emotion, and wasn’t feeling anything.
I was so overwhelmed.
On our squad coaches last day in Lima, I had a one on one with Betsy. As we talked, she made a simple statement: “Soak. Soak in Him. Soak in the Word. Just soak.”
For three weeks before that meeting, I had been running away from everything God was wanting to do in me. And in that, I was also running from Him. At debrief, He just kept shouting, “Stop running. You are running away from the one thing that would get you through this phase of burn out!” And then Betsy gave me the word to just soak in Him, in His presence.
How many times do we run away when life gets messy or things get overwhelming? I tend to run when I can’t figure things out on my own or if it seems too much. Instead of sitting in the process and being patient and letting Jesus lead me through, I run away.
But isn’t it true that it is only Jesus that will get us through? He is the one that sets us free. He is the one that carries us when we can’t walk. He is the one that fights for us. He is the one that leads us. He leads, not me.
And I was running from that.
Stop running. Surrender. Jesus is enough.
And that is the realization that I came to. As more of Jesus increased in my life and as I soaked in His presence, burn out seemed to disappear…it faded away as He began shining through.
Are you running from Jesus? He is enough. He will get you through!
