In two short weeks, I’ll be making the move down to Gainesville for my first semester in the Center for Global Action. The question I always get is “what will you be doing down there?”
As with most things related to Adventures, I’m not totally positive exactly what I’ll be doing. What I do know is I am participating in the Story track. “The Story Track is an opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field of storytelling. This includes blogging, writing articles, photography, and video. You’ll be working with Adventures’ marketing team to tell stories of people living bold, courageous lives. It’s a fast-paced team, with lots of ownership over how much you want to learn and develop—and it’s a great way to gain the experience you need to be a successful storyteller,” as the CGA website defines it.
And while the technical definition is helpful, the more important question in my mind is why?
Why Story?
Shortly after coming home from the Race, I shared with a friend the most humbling experience I had: people entrusting me with their stories. Frequently after meeting someone and spending some time with them, they would ask me, “tell your family about us, tell your church what we are doing here.” They knew I was but a piece, connected to a larger community, a larger body of believers and the trusted me to carry their stories back with me.
I want to honor that trust. I want to share the faces I saw and the hearts behind them.
My goal in this next season is to feature a person I met on the Race, once each month, and share some of their story with you.
Admittedly, my blogging while on the Race was somewhat lacking, especially after my laptop was stolen. Rather than regretting that, I am choosing to learn from it and use this next season to focus on the amazing people I learned from last year.
