Here is a little look at the travel my team took from Northern Thailand to the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua.

Travel within Thailand

  • We took a 6 hour bus ride from Chiang Khong to Chiang Mai
  • Spent the night at a YWAM base (another mission organization) and had the opportunity to talk to other young people doing missions from across the globe (New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, and the US- Colorado even)
  • Took an over night bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for 10 hours.

Travel from Thailand to Nicaragua

  • We met up with the rest of our squad and flew from Bangkok to South Korea(6 hour flight and 5 hour layover)
  • We flew from South Korea to Los Angeles, USA (11 hour flight and 15 hour layover)
  • During this layover, there were many immigration protests going on throughout the day. Talk about a wake up call.
  • During our 15 hour layover in Cali, my team mate, Mariah, and I spent the day with my Aunt Karen. She picked us up from the airport and we went to Target, In-n-out Burger, Frozen yoghurt and back to her house to relax and have a home cooked meal before heading back to the airport for our next flight. She was very much a blessing.
  • We flew from Los Angeles to Houston (3 hour flight and 4 hour layover)
  • We flew from Houston to Managua, Nicaragua (3 hour flight)
  • We landed, went through customs and met some ministry hosts who had lunch for us.
  • Traveled to Granada and spent the night in a hostel. I watched the sunset in the central church bell tour and had some authentic Central American food.
  • The next morning, we left the hostel at 5am to walk to the "Chicken Bus" stop a half mile away. We were responsible for carrying everything we brought with us.
  • We rode the Chicken Bus (a school bus which is their public transportation) for an hour and a half to San Jorge. Our packs were on top of the Chicken Bus and we had over 100 people, locals and racers, stuffed in the bus.
  • We took an hour long ferry ride from San Jorge to the island Ometepe.
  • We were picked up in vans and taken to our ministry. Once there, excited kids, a beautiful view, and a delicious breakfast awaited us.

I made it to Nicaragua! I am at our ministry for the next 2 weeks which is located on the island, Ometepe, which was formed by two volcanos.  My team is with 3 other teams for these weeks here as we serve the ministry Cicrin. This is a home for children from very poor or unsafe families. Their goal is to raise them with Christian teachings and support them through high school. There are about 20 kids here from the ages 3 to 13.

We are right on Lake Nicaragua. The nature sounds are so peaceful and the quiet times so fruitful.

Love you all and praying,

Kimmy
