It was really, really cold this morning. Praise God I bought that extra sweatshirt last Saturday. We heard from Steve that there was actually and accumulation of snow in Johannesburg this morning. They have not had snow in twenty years, and of course the record was broken while we are here. It’s a really good thing we are not sleeping in our tents.
Even as it is, we were so cold that Kelly bought a heater at the mall to put in our room. Then the breaker switch broke in our house, so we had to run an extension cord from next door so we could still use our heater. That little heater saved us from freezing last night.
We didn’t have very many kids today because it was so cold. Many kids do not have warm enough clothes to be outside in this kind of weather. They had to stay home where they could sit near a fire, and burn anything they could find on the ground to stay warm.
We have been taking turn walking over to the squatter camp, Joe Slovo, next door. One of the groups met a business woman there that went to hand out firewood to the families living there. When they offered to help her, they also found out that she had brought a collection of hats and gloves and other warm clothes to give out. She needed help distributing them, so they offered to bring them and give them to the kids. It was perfect.
This all was a great confirmation of our lessons about God providing and protecting us. He really did answer prayers and provide for these kids. And He provided for us with the heater and the extension cord and the opportunity to buy more clothes at the mall before it got colder. We may not get everything we want, but we do get everything we need.
