The race to Antigua was a little interesting. We hired vans to drive us to the border, and then hired vans at the border to drive us to Antigua. We thought we were doing good, but after arriving, we found out the team that left last beat us there by two hours. They didn’t make as many stops, and their driver was fast. Our driver supposedly knew a short cut, but although it may have been shorter, is was slower than if we had taken the main highways.

Guatemala is very different than Mexico. It is cooler and mountainous. Antigua is a very charming little tourist town. The buildings look very European, and the streets are made of cobble stone.

We are spending the first three nights in a church. Since we arrived earlier than expected, Chad had to find us some lodging at the last minute. This church offered their sanctuary for us to use, and there are nice bathrooms outside. We don’t have showers, but it’s cooler here so it’s not so bad.

We will be separating out again into smaller groups for the rest of the week. Our group will be staying in a hostel, with showers – yippee!

We did a little street ministry yesterday. We stopped to talk with a guy laying next to the sidewalk outside a clinic. He was 15 years old, and completely on his own. He just lays around sniffing glue all day. We sat and talked with him for a while. You could tell he was very grateful for the company.

We invited him to come and hang out with us as long as he wasn’t sniffing while he was with us. He started to join us, but then he changed his mind. The addiction was just to strong. We hope to go back and keep visiting him and just befriending him. Hopefully he will trust us enough to let us get him plugged in somewhere that he can get help.
