I’ve been thinking a lot lately about generational curses and what we pass down. What kind of inheritance do I leave to the people that are in my path or are influenced by me in any way?

So many times I have interviews with participants and the generational influence is undeniable. I listen to their testimony and the hard things they have been through in their lives.

Let’s face it, we all have baggage and crap that needs to be dealt with. Life is messy.

Then I talk to them about their family. The family unit is the most influential part of a child’s life. It’s overwhelming the amount of baggage that comes from families who live ungodly lives.

Emotional, spiritual, and physical abuse, high standards of perfection, Divorce, not being around or just not caring about their children are just some of the things that children are dealing with from their parents in today’s society.

It’s no wonder that applications are full of stories of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and attempts, sexual activity, violence, OCD, homosexuality, drugs, eating disorders, self-mutilation, not to mention the more talked about problems of worry, stress, dishonesty, control, rebellion and hopelessness.

Yes, these are the things that the participants that go on the World Race have dealt with. We don’t only accept picture perfect Christians.

When I first started doing interviews at AIM I quickly learned to have tissues near me. The stories of the lives lived cut deep into my heart. I have so often gotten off the phone after holding my voice together, while tears streamed down my face, and ran to the bathroom to sit for a while and ask God why?

Most of the stories have redemption etched into them.

God is bigger than any of the crap that has influenced these young adults.

But all too often along with the redemption that is evident, there are still clear places that freedom is not being lived. Places where the rejection, fear, and religion still has a grasp firmly around their lives.

They need Freedom. They need the love of God the Good Father.

Who is your life influencing? What have your actions, inaction or words passed down into the lives of those who are watching you? It’s something to think about.
