“I do not want to be on the unsung heroes team.”
Those are the words I said to my squad mate Courtney before our team change session. I was never interested in being unsung heroes. There are many racers who are excited to be the unsung team or can’t wait to be assigned unsung heroes for the month. Not this girl. If I went the entire race without being unsung heroes, i’d be a happy camper.
Let me take a moment to explain unsung heroes. There is not a set ministry or schedule. You arrive in the assigned city, stay at a hostel and spend the month searching for ministries. There is a certain budget that you have to stick to and that may mean relying on a contact (that you have to find) to stay with if hostels are too expensive. I don’t like not knowing where i’m going or what I’ll be doing. I like having an assigned ministry for the month and knowing where i’m going to sleep at night. Unsung month can be quite unpredictable, or so I hear. However, because of the uncertainty of it all, you get to see God show up in BIG ways. The goal is to find various ministries in hopes of cultivating relationships with them, joining their vision, and serving their needs, in order that they may partner with the world race in the future. The main desire is to come along side and serve with them in hopes of building the Kingdom together and bring the Light and Truth to the people of that country. It’s a beautiful ministry and a great opportunity to meet a lot of people.
As the moment approached and new teams were assigned, to my disappointment, I was on the unsung heroes team. Needless to say, I was bummed. As we arrived in Thailand and started working the Lord started to change my heart. Within the first week we found a number of contacts and received some leads on other contacts. We sent out emails and scheduled meetings within just days of being in the city of Chiang Mai. Maybe this unsung thing isn’t too bad.
New continent, new ministry and new team :-). My team decided on the name Victorious Secret as our team name. We are seeking out those hidden secrets in Chiang Mai. Those ministries that are serving this city but no one knows about. Those people that are having victory in Jesus.
Also, it’s a play on words for “Victoria’s Secret” cause what better name than that for an all girls team 🙂
Our vision for this month is to build solid relationships with quality contacts, serving in ministry alongside them, to further the kingdom. I will spend this month with 6 amazing ladies and serve with them. I’m excited for the things God’s going to do this month and the ministries we will meet.
(Team Victorious Secret: Deborah, Wendy, Michelle, Carly, Elizabeth, Lacey)
If you know anyone in Chiang Mai, Thailand trying to serve Jesus, let a sista know :-). It can be a missionary, organization or church we can partner with.
Stay Blessed
Kim 🙂
