Muli bwanji! Greetings from Zambia. This month we had the opportunity to go teach at the Good Samaritan School in Lusaka. We taught them bible lessons and hygiene lessons on how to properly wash their hands. These kids were such a joy. They were always so excited to see us.

I had never considered that they hadn’t seen a “black muzungu” before. “Muzungu” is their word for “white person”. It seemed amazing to them to see me. This dark skinned girl who is from America. The second time we went back to the school, I met the teacher whose class we had taught in his absence since he was sick. He came to me and told me that the kids couldn’t stop talking about me. They told him, “teacher, she is black like us”. I can’t imagine the impact it must have had on those kids to see someone “like them” amongst the muzungus. Someone “like them” who is from America. Someone “like them” who is educated and is traveling the world. What a blessing to be there. To teach them. To get to know them. To hear their stories and to just love them. This is why i’m here… and maybe, just maybe I can be a ray of hope for these kids so they can dream big. If it’s possible to have a “black muzungu” then heck anything in this world is possible.

Meet my class! Can you spot me in the photo?
