We’re in Guatemala!!! Right now we’re in Quiché which is around 7,000 ft. above sea level, meaning it’s much chillier than I expected when I was packing. Note to future world racers going to Central America: just because you’re in Central America doesn’t mean it will be super hot. I wish I would’ve packed a few more long sleeved shirts and a pair of jeans.
This month our squad is all living together but we’re working at different ministry sites. My team is working with another team at the National Hospital of Guatemala. The first ministry day we were taken on a tour of the hospital. We got to meet a little boy who had been abandoned. He was 3 years old, but he looked to be around 1 and a half. He was so malnourished that you could see all his bones through his skin and his head was so out of proportion to his body. The doctors weren’t sure he was going to survive 3 weeks ago. He’s still alive today and has been able to gain some weight. I had always seen pictures of malnourished children in pictures, but I’ve never seen it in real life. It is absolutely heart breaking to see a child have to go through that.
We’ve mainly been doing maintenance around the hospital wherever they need us. So far we have sanded some window bars, lockers, and a storage area so that we can paint it. Some of the team has also washed the hospital windows inside…with a water hose! I think what has been the hardest thing so far is getting used to the work style in Central America. They aren’t as adamant about getting things done by a certain deadline, which is hard for us people from the states because in the US, time is money. The hour and a half lunch break isn’t too shabby though J.
I’m continually learning new things about myself that put a hindrance on my complete freedom in Christ, which is another blog in itself. I’m so excited to see how God is going to draw me closer to Him within this next month and I’ll be sure to post a blog about it!
