You may be wondering WHY I would put a picture of Betty and Wilma from the Flinstones on my blog. It’s a funny story. Tauna met a young lady here in China and they became instant friends. She does not speak very much English, but is learning a lot through conversations with Tauna and the rest of us. I also met a young girl from Tibet. She speaks a little more English than Tauna’s friend and actually has an English name….BETTY!!! Well…Tauna’s friend, Tauna, Betty, and I were hanging out one day and the girls gave Tauna and I Chinese names. Tauna’s is MingChi and my name is Derma (pronounced like TuMOR). We decided that Tauna’s friend needed a name. Out of ALL the English names, we gave her WILMA!!! Now, we are friends with Betty and Wilma. She is so proud of her English name and now introduces herself as Wilma. If she only knew….
I have really enjoyed myself here in China. I got to teach an English class in a local high school. What an experience!!! I became friends with 4 students in the class. They have come to our hotel for English classes and they got permission to miss school today to spend the day with us. Betty and Wilma also came with us. Today, we learned so much about the culture, traditions, and religions in this town. We went and visited another school and sang Amazing Grace to an English class. I also did a Chinese dance that I learned around the classroom with my friend, Chad, and Lloyd.
I absolutely love the people here in this town. The people here would spend every second of their day with us if they could. I never thought I would leave China with 5 best friends!!
