Oh goodness…it is 8pm on Thursday night. This afternoon at about 4 we headed back from “town”… the streets were flooded in places where they once were not. During our 20 minute drive back we were talking about how when we got “home” the water shouldn’t be any worse…we were wrong!!!! The minute we pulled on to the street everything that wasn’t under water before we left was now.
All we could do was park the vehicle and get out and walk in it. We got out and started walking in ankle deep water. All the kids around had their bikes riding around in it, so Jessica and I decided to get two bikes and see how deep the water was at the end of the street. We got to where the top of the handle bars were covered when we decided to turn around.
Gradually through out the day and night the water has been rising pretty rapidly.
Now (at 8pm) the water in the streets is knee deep and the water is starting to come up in the Pastor’s yard. We have been told that this kind of thing happens about 3 times a year and it has never flooded the Pastor’s house, but we are taking all the precautions we need to take because it is very possible that it could happen.
Since the room the girls are staying in open up directly to the outside, we have moved everything off of the floor onto beds. We are going to stay the night here and see how much worse things get, but if they get too bad…we might go ahead and head out to Palenque in the morning. The highways here are built up, so they should not be flooded and okay to drive on.
It is pretty crazy here!!! We can not do anything. Everyone in the whole village is just sitting outside and watching the water rise and there is nothing you can do. There are snakes, frogs, and all kinds of grose things out there. The Pastor’s wife has already warned us about getting up through out the night and watching where we walk because there will be all kinds of grose things!!!! I am not excited about that.
Friday morning update…last night the water got as high as the pastor’s front step, but thank goodness it didn’t go anymore. The rain stopped and through out the night the water tended to recede some. The pastor’s yard was once under water and now there are just puddles, but the water in all the streets is still to your knees. I believe all the rain has stopped.
Please be in prayer for these people as they start to help each other restore life to normal. We have been told they have a “buddy” system and that the whole village starts at one house and then continue until everyone’s house and things are back to normal.
