11 Things I Learned in Serbia

  1. Not all translators are created equal
  2. When someone is praying in a different language you don’t have to know what they are saying you can just know that through the Holy Spirit you are praising the same God
  3. People’s testimonies are powerful. Those who believe and follow the Lord will always have a powerful story. Things that change your life can change the lives of other people. Sometimes there are parts of your story that  you want to forget or are embarrassed or ashamed by. Those are almost always the parts the Lord uses to encourage others. Have the boldness and vulnerability to share.
  4. When someone gives you a compliment an okay response to that is, “it’s God’s will.” An 84 year old woman taught me that one!
  5. When you get the chance to sit down with the pillars of a church ask as many questions as they will allow and soak in every word. Ask about their marriages, their kids, their spiritual gifts, their testimonies, and their parents. Ask questions and listen carefully. You will not fail to be encouraged.
  6. When your Serbian grandmother tells you to not be afraid and that you are God’s child and he loves you and you need to worship him even when you are alone, you better nod your head, believe it, and kiss her on the cheek.
  7. Having code words with your team for unsafe situations or creepy men following you comes in handy. Our word was “lobster” thanks to yours truly.
  8. When you do your laundry don’t forget to put away your chonies. You never know when someone is gonna stop by. Your house is an open house for ministry.
  9. Dying your hair with a cut off bottom of a bottle for a bowl and a toothbrush is incredibly successful.
  10. Power can be found when you voice your struggles and weaknesses. Satan is a…a… stupid head. When you are able to identify where you are weak you can predict and be aware of where he will attack you. Crush him.
  11. Placing the toilet behind the pulpit and the pastor REALLY makes you question if you actually have to go.
