For the month October, we worked with Team Lahcam in the Western Cape area in Cape Town. The ministry was with Pastor Daniel and Principal Vivienne du Plessis at their church and affiliated school. Fellowship Bible Church and Fellowship Bible Church Christian School serve the community of squatter and farm camps and the impoverished Freedom Park area. The school caters to children affected by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and other poverty-related barriers to learning. These organizations serve the whole family and rely on the generosity of all donors-monetary, material, or time from volunteers. Learn more on their website http://www.fbcschool.org.za.

Our teams were integrated into the church’s Wednesday evening evangelism and open air service and Sunday worship (testimonies, songs, message, and skit presented). On Monday through Friday from 7am to 3pm we worked at the school. Some of us taught classes to the Créche (pre-school) and Grade R (kindergarten) thru Grade Seven students (art, computer, reading, and music), some prepared meals in the kitchen, and the men did lots of maintenance and yard work.

Challenges

  • Kids behavior
  • Limited resources
  • Mental exhaustion

Celebrations

  • Evangelism and open air services were held where students live. Seeing the extremely poor living conditions in squatter camps and farms helped us be more compassionate and connect with the children, and manage their behavior better.
  • WR Men removed many small trees and bushes that provided a hideout for men who attacked children in route to/from school.

Thanks so much to Pastor Danny and Mrs. Viv

for all the extra love given to us. They provided mentoring, transporation, weekly wifi, and delicious meals. The school and church are near and dear to their hearts. They are giving severely disadvantaged kids a second chance at life. Please visit their website to show support.

Chantél Daniels of Volunteer Mzanzi AFRIKA organized our entire stay in South Africa. She put us in contact with the du Plessis's, secured housing, and planned our weekends. Please check out her website to learn about partnering with her organization.
