I arrived in Kenya, on Tuesday May 25, 2010 at 6:00am. I walked off the plane expecting to meet warm weather again. Instead I was meted with a cold kiss of fresh air and for a split second I imagined that I was back home in Canada during the fall season when the leaves just begin to turn colors.
The next thing I remember was Courtney my teammate running towards me with tears of joy in her eyes. For the last five months I heard constant stories of Kenya because Courtney spent the last five years of her life going back and forth doing short term missionary work, then the last two years she was a teacher at Rift Valley Academy in Kijebe. Courtney flung her arms around me; constant tears came streaming from her eyes and her embrace got tighter and tighter. Courtney wept for about a good 20 minutes and that was my first impressions of Africa.
Later, we arrived at a Backpackers Hotel in Nairobi. It immediately felt like home. I knew I would be staying here for a few days because all teams were having debrief and our squad parents Roger and Rozy were coming in.
On our first day I met a couple, Job and Arnica and their daughter Yette who had the cutest smile. I had the privilege the next few days to get to know them. I was able to share my story of how God has restored and redeemed me. How I once was living in darkness but when Jesus saved me my life was completely changed and transformed. I wish I had more time with this family but please pray for them as they are looking for jobs here in Kenya and also, pray for their spiritual journeys.
I want to give an update on my team Citizens of Hope. Our debriefing time actually went well. Isn’t that amazing? In Thailand we had a mini debrief and let’s just say we had a lot of issues to work through. This time we walked in being confident and changed. We all grew in our month in Thailand; we all battled with the enemy but defeated him and his lies and claimed God’s truths. We are no longer being cowards; we are transformed men and woman who are taking up our cross and following Christ no matter the cost.
I am excited to see what God is going to do through us the next six months. I believe there’s an all-consuming fire in each of us to reach the lost, to defend the poor and the widow, to stand for justice and peace. We are not content with mere Christian living; we all want more and willing to be filled daily with the Holy Spirit’s power. Follow our journey because I believe God is going to awaken a revival in the nations that we step into. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova.
