While we were in Haiti, Alex, our host, had a group from a construction ministry come down to visit because they had fundraised to help Alex a new building. While this group was in Haiti, they brought a backpack, pair of underwear and shorts for the boys and a backpack, pair of underwear and hand sown dress for the girls. I was able to help the construction group go from class to class passing out all the backpacks, shorts, dresses and underwear; watching the kids light up with joy as they realized that this was their backpack. That is something I will never forget. The rest of the two weeks we were in Haiti I got to see the continued excitement and utter joy come from each child to proudly walk around with their very own backpack.
The best moment of the whole experience. I will preface this by saying any boy in Haiti has the option to go #1 whenever and wherever he wants. Sky’s the limit. I can’t tell you how many times I had to tell multiple boys not to pee in certain areas or at times because that just wasn’t appropriate.
In the second grade classroom, we were doing our thing handing out backpacks and everything else. All the kids had sat back down and were looking at the new clothes they had received when I noticed two boys sitting off to the side talking and pointing. So naturally I moved in to get a closer look. While eaves dropping, I saw the boys pointing at their underwear and start talking. Mind you I couldn’t tell you exactly what was said because it was in a different language but they were pointing and picking up the underwear. Boy #1 ended up picking up the underwear to take a closer look while Boy#2 encouraged him. Finally Boy #1 ended up sticking his pointer finger through the pee hole while Boy #2 watched. I could see and hear them talking and then all of the sudden BAM! The boys had a revelation of what that was for and they just lost it in laughter. Watching this was absolutely priceless!
I ended up starting to laugh at the boys and when they realized I was laughing at them they in turned started to laugh harder at my laugh. 🙂

(Boy #1 is the one looking away and Boy #2 is the one about to fall out of his chair)
