Halloween was….an adventure to say the very least. Without our families and normal holiday traditions for the spooky season, The A-Team and The Seekers were determined to make a Halloween in Nepal one to remember.

The day of, we all headed down the mountain a bit to get to town, so that we could all by Halloween candy for each other (Carly was the one mom who gets everybody apples, I absolutely died laughing). After an hour of scrounging around for little candies and whatever sweets we could possibly find (because other than Snickers there’s actually not a lot of candy bars in Nepal) we headed back up the mountain, back up our lovely 77 steps to the church, and set to work.

We spread across the room, Gresom, Ramesh and the other Nepali natives looking on bemused, as we picked our “doors” and plopped our candy in our laps. Sami insisted that we all dress up as much as we could and picked a “costume” so to speak. She used the walking stick Papa gave her for her legs and bent down to be a kindly old lady for the evening (honestly, I freaking died when her hand shook so much I couldn’t take the candy from her, she literally cracks me up all the time oh my gosh). I used my green sleeping bag liner to be a frog, and hopped around the room all night as we each one by one went “door to door”. Ramesh, hilariously, I think misinterpreted our explanation of Halloween (because we invited our friends in on the Halloween fun and candy) and decided to fully invest in his character. He hopped around the room like a possessed gremlin on hands and feet and a wild smile just to make us all laugh.

It was the first holiday we’d spent away from our families, and it turned out awesome.
