Quick Update
Location: Calabar, Nigeria
(Southern Nigeria in one of the more peaceful
states)
Squad Leader:
Jory will be with us this month.
Ministry: Word
Alive Church- among other activities we will be teaching Bible study classes on
Tuesdays (topic- the Holy Spirit), teaching the kids and teens on Sundays,
preaching at Crusades in surrounding villages, visiting patients in the General
Hospital, visiting prisoners in the local prison, and helping with the radio
and TV shows put on by the church. Our contacts have been so hospitable and all
the church members very friendly and welcoming.
Housing: We are
staying in the guest house behind the Reverend’s home. Annie, Sydnee, and I are
in one room, Jory in another, and although Will and Tyson have their own room
they have staked out the living room for sleeping purposes because it has
better breeze flow at night. In other news- there is a lizard living in my
room. The power is only on at certain times in the day. I spend a good
percentage of the day scratching bug bites. The water gets shut off
sporadically. I usually wake up at 3am because it’s just too hot to sleep (I’m
also pretty sure the Holy Spirit is using this to wake me up to pray for
certain things/people). Every day I hope it rains so the temp will drop 10
degrees. I have definitely been the most uncomfortable in Africa
and some days it’s difficult not to complain.
Security= Obama and
Abdul. Security is given high priority in Nigeria and at our living quarters
comes in the form of two large rottweilers. I know they are needed but they are
pretty intimidating creatures. On one of the first nights Obama was not chained
up properly and pounced on me. No injuries but I was told that if it had been
Abdul I wouldn’t have stood a chance.
Sidenote: Annie,
Will, and I were interviewed on a live local morning show on Wednesday. Hopefully
we will receive a copy of it on a CD from the station and be able to upload for
all to see. They asked the following questions:
When did you arrive in Calabar?
Why did you decide to make Word Alive Church your home-base for your work in
Calabar?
How do you like Nigeria
and what sights have you seen so far?/ How do you find the people in Nigeria?/
How has your stay been so far?
Tell us about your organization and trip.
What activities and ministry will you be participating in
with the church?
What is the biggest challenge you have faced with the people
you have met on your mission trip?
Was it difficult to leave home and do you feel like you are
missing out on life, such as having a spouse and kids while you are gone for
the year?
